"Intoxicated" High School Teacher Accused Of Kidnapping 3 Students At Knife Point

John Maust, 34, an instructor at Arroyo Pacific Academy, is accused of kidnapping three of his own 17-year-old students at knife point. The incident occurred when the students were driving around and noticed their teacher, Maust, standing on a sidewalk intoxicated. The students asked if he needed a ride home, which Maust agreed. The students felt uncomfortable with the conversation with Maust and pulled the vehicle over so that the students could exit the vehicle.

Maust ordered them to get back inside the vehicle and they agreed, fearing for their lives, Maust threatened the students with a knife. One of the students was able to call 911 for help. Maust spotted a sheriff's helicopter and instructed the student to stop driving the vehicle so he could flee the scene before officials arrived to take him into custody. Maust self-surrendered himself to authorities the next day and was booked on suspicion of kidnapping, false imprisonment and making threats. Maust was jailed in lieu of $100,000 bail.
