Head of the Federal Prison System Arrested for DUI

The head of the Bureau of Prisons, the federal prison system, Harley Lappin, recently announced that he was retiring.  He also informed his staff that he had been arrested and charged with driving under the influence.   

Lappin was pulled over Feb. 26, 2011, in Maryland after an officer spotted him driving erratically.  Police noted that Lappin's eyes were bloodshot, his speech slurred, his breath smelled of alcohol and he failed multiple sobriety tests.  He is facing three charges related to drunk driving as well as other charges including:  reckless driving, negligent driving and failure to obey the instructions of a traffic control device.

Lappin has run the federal prisons system since 2003 after several years running the prison in Butner, North Carolina.
