Paris Hilton is Sentenced for Cocaine Possession in Vegas

Last month, Paris Hilton was riding in her boyfriend's Cadillac Escalade when he was pulled over by Las Vegas police.  While waiting, Hilton opened her purse to retrieve lip balm, inadvertently displaying a small amount of cocaine to the police officer standing next to her.

Hilton was originally charged with Felony Cocaine Possession, which has a maximum of four years in prison under Nevada law.  However, after working out a plea deal with prosecutors she was able to avoid jail and admit to two misdemeanor charges of Drug Possession and Obstructing an Officer.  As part of the deal, she will be on probation for a year and must stay out of trouble or face jail time.  Hilton has also been ordered to complete a substance abuse program, 200 hours of community service and pay $2,000 in fines.

In California, the possession of narcotics such as cocaine, crack, heroin, ecstasy, ketamine, GHB and even prescription drugs such as Vicodin or Codeine (if they're not lawfully prescribed) is a felony crime pursuant to Health and Safety Code § 11350.  The penalties for possession include up to three years in the California state prison.

If you or someone you know has been charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance, Obstructing an Officer or Driving Under the Influence of Drugs and/or Alcohol, contact Los Angeles Criminal Defense Attorney Robert M. Bernstein today.
