Marijuana Possession of less than one ounce is no longer a crime in California

Marijuana Possession of less than one ounce is no longer a crime in California

For the first time in 35 years, the penalties for the use of non-medical marijuana have been reduced.  On September 30th, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger signed a bill that downgrades the possession of one ounce or less of marijuana from a criminal misdemeanor to an infraction.  This means that instead of having to make a court appearance and suffering a criminal arrest record, those found in possession of marijuana (up to an ounce) will be punished by a simple $100 fine and no arrest record.

The new law will take effect on January 1, 2011, and will save the state of California millions of dollars in court and prosecution expenses.
