Sex Offender Registration
Robert Bernstein explains sex offender registration and the penalties for failing to register.
If you have been convicted of a sex crime in the state of California you may be required under California penal code section 290 to register as a sex offender with your local police department. This law requires that you register once a year on about your birthday and notify them of your prior sex conviction.
Failure to register as a sex offender is a new crime in and of itself. Which carries serious penalties including state prison time. What most people don't understand is their prior crime which caused them to register may be a strike offense. Therefore if you are charged and convicted for failure to register as a sex offender, you're not just looking at a second felony conviction.
You're looking at a crime that has a prior strike. Meaning that penalties can be up to 12 years in state prison merely for failing to register as a sex offender as required by law. If you are in this situation you need an experienced criminal defense attorney to defend your case. Contact my offices for a free consultation.
