Gerald Rupple, 25, is facing multiple felony charges after hiding his medical
condition that caused him to pass out behind the wheel and crash the bus,
injuring five students. Rupple was driving a school bus of 7
th and 8
th graders when he passed out behind the wheel going about 50 mph causing
the bus to veer off the road and crash into several trees. Four students
suffered major injuries including fractured bones, intracranial hemorrhaging,
a shattered spine and amputation of a toe.
Rupple is accused of not disclosing his medical condition to the physician
conducting his required commercial driver fitness examination and falsely
declaring under penalty of perjury that his medical history was accurate.
Rupple is charged with one felony count each of perjury by declaration,
child abuse and endangerment and a sentencing enhancement for causing
great bodily injury and is being held in lieu of $100,000 bail.
If convicted, Rupple faces up to 19 years in State Prison.
