Woman Sentenced for Staging Fake Funerals in Insurance Fraud

Faye Shilling, a Los Angeles woman who staged fake funerals to defraud insurance companies out of nearly $1 million, was recently sentenced to two years in federal prison and ordered to pay around $330,500 in restitution after pleading guilty to two counts of Wire Fraud.

Shilling and co-defendant Jean Crump of Los Angeles, collected almost $1 million from insurance and lending companies by purchasing policies for fictitious people and then staging their fake deaths and funerals.  Shilling, a nurse, and Crump, who worked at a Long Beach mortuary, filled caskets with various materials so they appeared to contain corpses.  After the funerals, the women filed bogus documents with the county saying the remains had been cremated and scattered at sea.
