Suspect arrested for thousands of marijuana plants found in a Granada Hills park

In California, the laws concerning marijuana possession and cultivation can be confusing.  Even with a prescription for medical marijuana, one can be arrested and charged with a crime.  Recently, the Los Angeles Police Department launched a 10-month investigation, enlisting the California Air National Guard to search for illicit marijuana growers and aerially photograph any suspicious land in the area.

In July of 2010, the search led to the discovery of 3,000 marijuana plants as well an intricate irrigation system in O'Melveny Park in Granada Hills, California.  Police set up a surveillance team in order to catch the guilty gardener.  On August 12, Natale Gabriele showed up to tend to his plants, unaware that he was under police surveillance.  Once Gabriele was finished with his tasks, the officers followed him to his car where he was arrested on suspicion of possessing marijuana for sale.  More arrests related to the Granada Hills grow spot are expected.

Under California law, the cultivation and possession of marijuana with intent to sell is charged as a felony.  Those convicted may face up to six years in state prison.

If you have been charged with possession of a controlled substance with intent to sell or cultivation of marijuana, you need a skilled attorney on your side.  Contact Los Angeles Criminal Defense Attorney Robert M. Bernstein for a free consultation today.
